Unclaimed Funds

Pursuant to Wis.Stats. 59.66(2), the purpose of this state statute is to return money to its rightful owner.

County and municipal unclaimed funds consist of uncashed checks that are older than 1 year, originally issued for an array of potential reasons, and the money is still due to the rightful owner. When these funds are reported as unclaimed, municipal treasurers and county agencies track and report this to the County Treasurer for public notice posting in the newspaper and online.

The rightful owner has 10 years to claim these funds from the Dane County Treasurer.

Claimant's cooperation and preparation is needed with

  1. Providing background information about the funds and amount
  2. Attesting in front of a notary to the truthfulness of the claim
  3. Understanding claims are mailed within 8 weeks
  4. Emailing treasurer@danecounty.gov if not received within 8 weeks

  • Trustee of the trust named as the claimant
